Humanity AI just launched its first call for proposals for projects focused on community-led efforts in three issue areas central to Humanity AI’s work. By community-led, Humanity AI broadly means those most affected by the technological changes are defining the goals, shaping the approach, and driving the work. Projects may be creative/artistic, humanistic, social scientific, policy-oriented, or technical. Efforts are eligible whether or not they incorporate AI.
In partnership with Foundation Relations and the A&S Working Group on AI, we will hold a meeting for all A&S faculty interested in this opportunity on September 25th from 12:00-12:45 p.m. to provide strategic information about the funders, to provide assistance to projects that may benefit from partnerships or collaboration, and to generally answer questions. Please register to receive the event invitation.
Issue areas include:
- Education: Shaping AI around the best interests of students, educators, and communities to develop and expand knowledge, strengthen how people learn, and safeguard against risks to humans;
- Labor: Ensuring AI is used to enhance, rather than replace, workers and to help create an economy that enables all of us to have what we need to thrive;
- Humanities, Arts, & Culture: Enhancing human creativity and understanding of the human experience while protecting the work of artists and creators.
There are 3 levels of funding available:
- Tier 1: $75,000-$150,000
- For single or two-person projects with a focused proposal; exploratory or pilot collaborative work; launching an early intiative
- Tier 2: $150,000-$500,000
- For individual or small team projects requiring sustained time or production resources, a collaboration with meaningful coordination or development costs
- Tier 3: $500,000-$1,000,000
- For a coalition of organizations requiring substantial coordination and dedicated staffing; a multi-year initiative with significant technical development or infrastructure costs; or an established organization launching an ambitious, resource-intensive pilot
Funded projects have the potential to receive follow-on funding from HumanityAI and unfunded projects may be considered by one of their partners (Doris Duke, Ford, Lumina, Kapor, MacArthur, Mellon, Mozilla, Omidyar Network, Packard, Siegal Family Endowment).
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your Research Development Manager (Caitlin Charos or Trisha Dant) if you have questions about this opportunity or the alignment of your project. We look forward to learning more about your projects at the meeting next week!
